These are bullets of activities, etc. for the first 6 days she has been there.
- She went to wedding yesterday (about 300 people) in the village
- She is doing well
- Staying at a compound with armed guard (not really an orphanage as we think of)
- Food is good (rice, chicken, fruit)
- People live in huts... very poor
- Tomorrow they start the soccer camp for the children
- Will be painting houses, going door to door evangelism, etc.
- Danielle gave her testimony at church today (300 or more people)
- Not like a typical orphanage (Katherine (mission director) has 3 children live with her, another staff member has 2-3 living with them)
- Day 7am to 7pm light... then pitch dark
- Rain every day
- She and Danielle see the Lord's hand in them being there. Very glad to be there
- Not sure that evangelism training with Dr. Krabbendam will work out.
- Sleeping well and we loves the people
- has met a lot of the children and some of the adult ladies
Update 2 May 23rd
Hi;)
It is 9 PM here. Just finished eating dinner about an hour ago. A lot has gone on so I will try to fill you in.
I did get my visa. Once we arrived in the airport we headed straight to a line to get it. It was only $50.
Kamonkoli hasn't had rain for the past 3-4 months but a few days before we got here it started. It is pretty hot during the day and we felt its intensity through soccer camp this past week! Hopefully I will come home looking like a Ugandan and no longer a mzungu;)
Soccer camp went great! We tried to do some drills but mainly just played games and had some stations. We handed out the jerseys on Wednesday and noticed the kids still wearing them today. It will probably be the only nice thing that some of these kids ever get.
The living situations are heartbreaking. I will never get images out of my mind of mud huts with naked kids sitting on the floor. Outside the houses are multiple graves of children and family members. They have nothing but have more joy than most people I know.
The men are looked at a little higher than women. Not that they women are respected but if there is a chair in the room then the man will take it. We were at a home Bible study today and it was outside. They brought mats and the women sat on the floor. They kneel when they meet us and treat us so highly.
We did the soccer camp Monday-Wednesday and are now doing VBS Thursday and Friday. We had around 200 kids today.
It's strange but I feel at home here. After the situation this past week, we moved in with Katherine. We live in a "compound" with an armed guard. It's nice to live with a family-I feel like I am a part:)
So many things have happened and I can't wait to show you pictures and explain more fully.
Everything we eat here is fresh....honestly, I think I have felt the healthiest here than I ever have. Found out that, yet again, I love the coffee in another country. I drink it every morning:)
There are a number of witch doctors around here that have put a curse on the HUM ministry. It may sound kind of funny saying that but I have never seen spiritual warfare as powerful as it is here. God has also never appeared so close. It is a daily need to get up and pray to make it through the day.
Oh yeah, we had a bat in the place where we stayed. That was kind of annoying....hah.
I will try to write again soon. Katherine has a computer in her house but the electricity goes out quite frequently and the connection isn't good.
I love you all, Cara
Update 3 May 24th
Re: Kozeo:) (Hello!)
Hey:)
I am going to try and email once a week. If not, don't worry, I am fine:)
We are leaving in the morning for Kumi to do the evangelism training with Dr. K....yay exciting! Two of the youth are coming with us (Boomba and Sarah). We should be gone till Friday.
Sorry you have been sick:( No fun! I actually was sick today but hoping it's just a 24-hour thing. I have been nauseous and dizzy all day but you know what Dad always says," You just gotta work through it." ;)
We had plenty of soccer balls and actually gave them out to people at the end as well as the cones. VBS is over with....it went pretty well. We sang Shabach and they LOVED IT!
The weather is amazing here. Definitely humid but at night you couldn't ask for better weather. It is actually their winter season here so it's been raining almost everyday.
Just pray for the ministry right now. I can explain more when I get home but the division was caused by a man in the church who was greedy for money. He lied to the couple from Colorado saying that Katherine never gave him money so the rumor spread. It has been causing some rifts but God is ultimately "holding all things together." Pray for discernment not only with Katherine and the staff but for us as well. It's challenging when they keep coming to you and I am trying extremely hard to listen and speak wisely.
Can't believe it's been almost 2 weeks. Relationships are continuing to grow and I know it's going to be extremely hard to leave these people. Don't worry I am taking pictures!
Oh yeah, I used their water in the first 5 minutes after we got here....I kinda forgot. HA! Been doing well though;)
Love you and hope you feel better!:)
